Digital Technology Supercluster Accelerates Progress Toward “Mine of the Future” with New Sustainable Biomining Solution


Canada paving the way to replace energy- and chemical-intensive resource extraction and mine site remediation methods with the first integrative microbiome analysis platform

VANCOUVER, BC, February 1, 2022 /PRNewswire/ – from Canada The Digital Technologies Supercluster is pleased to announce the launch of the Mining Microbiome Analytics Platform (MMAP) project, the largest investment in planned genomic sequencing of natural resources in the history of the sector. With breakthrough biomining solutions, the MMAP project will be the catalyst for sustainable mining practices globally by replacing energy- and chemical-intensive resource extraction methods and improving mine site clean-up techniques.

Minerals and metals are the cornerstones of building a better quality of life for communities around the world. While industry provides these much-needed products, it is also constantly looking for ways to improve environmental performance.

Led by Teck Resources Limited (TSX: TECK.A) and (TSX: TECK.B), (NYSE: TECK) (“Teck”), and in partnership with the University of British Columbia (UBC), BGC Engineering, Koonkie Canada, Rio Tinto, Genome BC, Allonnia, Microsoft and the Center for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI), this consortium creates the first integrated online platform to extract DNA from more than 15,000 sample mine sites over the next two years to identify microbes that can be used to replace chemical mining and other old ways of extracting minerals and metals, and to perform safer and more efficient old and operational mine sites. UBC’s Bradshaw Research Initiative for Minerals and Mining (BRIMM), in particular, has played a formative role in bringing together partners from private industry, not-for-profit genomics and mining mining and university researchers essential to this unique partnership.

The combination of technology companies, researchers and mining companies provides MMAP with both the critical mass to develop viable solutions and a direct path to commercial adoption.

This project is also supported by the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation, as well as the central government of Tahltan and Illumina, a global genomic sequencing company. The mining microbiome analysis platform project represents a total investment of $16,627,189 with $12,636,695 invested by industry and $3,990,494 co-invested in the Digital Supercluster Technology Leadership Program.
