Looking at design trends helps us understand what’s happening in the times we live in and what’s come before, and they can also help us predict what’s to come.

A few sites have chosen calm and cool colors as their warm color choices for 2022.

Pantone – Color of the Year
You can’t discuss color trends without talking about Pantone. They are the leading authority on color and they started issuing a color of the year in 2000. This year’s color is Very Peri, a type of periwinkle blue. Pantone provides an excellent preview of the selected color and other interesting information.

Shutterstock is a stock site used by designers around the world. They publish a list of color trends every year based on designer purchases. It’s pretty cool, because they’re using AI and sifting through “billions of bits of data” to show what colors the design world uses. Moreover, their methodology makes it unbiased, as it only involves collecting information from images purchased from their site.

For 2022, they predict more calm and soothing colors will take center stage – soothing coral, velvet purple, peaceful pink and green, to name a few. In 2021, Shutterstock’s AI system found green-dominated clickthrough rates and conversions. It’s information like this that makes Shutterstock’s trending lists more substantial and relevant.

Font Trends

This year, I see several font trends, including Serif fonts, large typography, flexible typography, text with gradients, transparent text, outline text, and mixed width. Great sites to check out for fonts – MyFonts, Design Shack and Shutterstock.

Shutterstock provides a list of font trends. Although it’s not generated by their AI but rather by a team of designers, it’s still a great list to compare against other font trending lists.

Serif Fonts – Many trending lists predict that serif fonts will make a comeback. But, of course, sans-serif fonts have been the norm for a while now, prevalent in mobile apps and websites. So seeing simpler, less ornate serif fonts isn’t much of a surprise.

Great Typography – In this situation, the bigger the better! Extremely large fonts attract attention and create a sensational effect. But, of course, its size will depend on where you use it.

Flexible Typography – The use of flexible typography allows designers to play with the height and width of individual letters. Late 19th century Gothic typefaces inspire him.

Text with gradients – A gradient is a progression of colors. It allows designers to create a unique look and feel. Combine your fonts with a gradient to grab attention.

transparent text – Allow your background images to show using transparent text. With this style, you have to surround the text with a block of solid color to make the letters pop.

outline text – This is typically used with Sans Serif fonts and associated with all caps. Draw attention to specific words by pairing outline text with solid lettering.

Mixed width – A new typographic trend that many people are highlighting this year is mixed-width type. Mixed width type is exactly what it sounds like – a typography where the width and even the height of the letters are mixed together. Mixed-width fonts allow designers to define the height and width of each letter. By a few examples, you can see that it is a very distinctive look that stands out.

Design trends

Now let’s look at general design trends. What kinds of things do people predict will be in demand in 2022? We scoured the lists and pulled out what we thought would be most applicable to digital signs.

Movement
The movement seems to be the most important trend, and rightly so. More and more, content is viewed on a digital platform, be it a phone, tablet or digital sign. Additionally, online platforms make it easy to create videos.

These days, where virtually anyone can view a video at any time, static images can’t compete. Motion draws people’s attention to your screen and your content. On digital signage, a subtle movement can have a huge impact.

Consider incorporating semi-transparent text or a logo above your video to subtly grab attention. Also play with zoom effects.

The 90’s
Yes, the 90s seem to be back, from symbols and icons to colors. Minimalist design was popular when mobile apps first appeared in the early 2000s, but now complex colors and images are used.

With so much design focused on mobile apps over the past decade – which has also brought about some pretty strict conventions around usability – it’s refreshing to see the design philosophy of the 90s becoming popular again.

Go back to basics and nature with organic shapes and neutral colors. Instead of sharp lines and geometric shapes, consider using curved lines to give your visuals a more natural and organic feel. Geometric shapes have a very rigid look, which impacts how your audience perceives your business. In comparison, organic shapes in your digital screen visuals could help you create a more open and inviting environment.
