“We provide training in data science, cybersecurity, embedded systems and 3D printing technology,” says Rashmi Sharma, manager of the Webel Fujisoft-Vara Center of Excellence. “We train existing students and graduates of engineering schools and professionals who want to improve their skills. 3D printing is the process of constructing three-dimensional objects from a computer-aided printing machine. For this, the institute uses seven imported Stratasys machines. “These are industrial machines and they stay ‘running’ 365 days a year,” says Associate Director Pratim Bhattacharjee. “They have coils of thermoplastic that are melted down to a jam-like consistency. As needed, a nozzle ejects it to form the necessary structure. Thermoplastic is designed for high strength and can even replace aluminum if needed.

The application of such an impression is limited only by the imagination. “Surgeons have found our services very useful,” says Bhattacharjee, showing 3D prints of a heart, kidney and mouth. With the help of CT scans and MRI scans, we can make exact replicas of the organs that need to be operated on. By studying them beforehand, surgeons can reduce the time and complications inside the operating room.

To reproduce the soft texture of the organs, the coils can use liquid resin instead of plastic.

“Various companies come to us to have prototypes of their products printed – helmets, toys, furniture, shampoo bottles… Plastic is cheaper when thousands of units are produced on the assembly line. But for a single unit, 3D is the most profitable, ”he explains. “Movies and web series are also printing their props these days. “

Impressions are billed by volume. A 300mm Saraswati idol that the institute had imprinted and worshiped during the Saraswati puja weighed 1.2kg. It took 100 hours of non-stop printing to create it and cost around Rs 40,000. “Prices also vary depending on accuracy. A medical print would require considerable detail and therefore be more expensive. But then, a centerpiece could be affordably priced at Rs 1,500, ”he says.

The institute is open to printing objects for individuals who are also willing to pay.

Ready for industry

The Center of Excellence, located near Uniworld City, is an initiative of the state government. It was set up by the IT and electronics department (through its nodal agency Webel) and the micro, small and medium-sized enterprises department. It is executed by a joint venture between Fujisoft Inc of Japan and Vara Technology of India.

The G + 3 floor campus offers smart classrooms with wifi, built-in audio systems and smart writing boards as well as an Android touchscreen board. They have their private cloud to manage big data, simulation rooms for cybersecurity exercises, a 100-seat auditorium and a co-working space for start-ups.

“We offer industry certification and are up to date with the latest developments to know what skills are in demand. The content of our courses is validated by the biggest names in the industry and the certificate therefore bears their name as well as ours, ”explains Sharma.

Duration: Certificate courses last 300 to 500 hours and admissions take place approximately every six months. The next promotion will be inducted in January. They also offer short-term introductory courses for novices. These can range from half a day to the length of the vacation.

Eligibility: For certifying courses, applicants must be graduates in areas specific to their course. For short courses, applicants can be as young as in class VII.
