This is a fantastic slideshare presentation from Amodiovalerio Verde on Linkedin.
Whilst it should come as no surprise that North America, followed by Europe make up over 3/4 of Linkedin’s 101 million users, what is interesting is the following:
- India has the 2nd highest number of Linkedin users, after the US and ahead of the UK. However conspicuous by its absence is China. From a socio-cultural perspective it would be interest to dig deeper into why Chinese professionals are not readily embracing Linkedin compared with their neighbour.
- A high proportion of Linkedin users in the US (30%) and Europe (30%) are part of small enterprises with less than a 1000 staff.
- Conversely Linkedin users in Asia are more likely to belong to a large enterprise with over 10,000 staff (55%).
- The industry sector with the largest presence is (unsurprisingly) IT followed by Finance. What was surprising for me was that Medical professionals had the fourth highest presence.
- The two most popular job functions are Sales and Administration and again surprisingly Academia in 3rd place
- Linkedin is used by 69 of the Fourtune 100 companies e.g. they have an official Company Page on Linkedin
I’m really surprised that China, with a highly educated and growing white collar professionals, barely register on Linkedin. I’m sure that further socio-political analysis comparing China and India would uncover how they approach social media channels such as Linkedin and Facebook.
