Very rarely do I get excited with an app, but I’m really impressed with Hipstamatic camera app for my iPhone 3GS. Essentially through an interchangeable combination of lens, film, and flashes you’re able to create stunning photographic effects using your iPhone. The app recreates the physical Hipstamatic Camera created in 1982 by two brothers, Bruce and Winston Dorbowski

The background story of Hipstamatic is bittersweet however. Bruce and Winston had created the Hipstamatic camera to bring cheap photography to the masses by making entirely out of plastic. However before the Hipstamatic could reach critical mass, the two brothers were tragically killed by a drunk driver in 1984.

The iPhone app is powerful and sympathetic reminder of Bruce and Winston’s creative legacy. I urge anyone to check out the detailed background on them and the Hipstamatic camera on Richard Dorbowski’s (their brother) blog.

The app is available to purchase on iTunes.

The photo you have put gives the affect of hipstamatic clearly.

I love the Hipstamatic, but the Snopes in my needs to put the boot to urban legends.

The history you mention is almost certainly fake, a bit of clever viral marketing, adding to the verisimilitude of the Hipstamatic style. I don’t fault them for that at all, though. It does add to the feel of what they’re going for with the app.

    Thanks Mossfoot.

Agreed the viral marketing to support the app has clearly worked. At the time of writing, Hipstamatic was just breaking through and I guess I was suckered in with the poignant backdrop
