A selection of links that have tweaked my interest

As another year comes to an end I thought I would compile a round up of stuff that’s floated my way over the past few days.

  1. A truly fascinating post by Luke Wroblewski on how tablets and other mobile devices impacts our reading patterns. The twice daily commute contributes to a significant spike in online news consumption. The secondly trend is how mobile consumers of LinkedIn peak at the end of the working day as they contemplate moving on after a tough day at work.
  2. Simple ideas can be obscured by bigger more expensive ideas according to Ogilvy’s Rory Sutherland in this TedTalk.
  3. Echoing some of my more recent thoughts (here, here, here), Peter Thiel has written a thoughtful piece on creativity, risk, innovation and entrepreneurism
  4. I’m a big fan of Steven Johnson’s Where Good Ideas Come From. He’s written some thoughts about how ideas are inherently social in nature here.
  5. Finally for irreverent and seasonal fun check out The Art of  Dancing video advent calendar.

I’ve been compelled to write a list of links to articles that have tweaked my interest in part down to the fact that I really like the content coming out of my Google+ planners circle. It seems that the right balance has been struck between volume and quality that has hitherto not been fulfilled by Facebook, Linkedin or Twitter.

Without further a do, here is this week’s list of articles:

  1. Raph’s 40 social mechanics for social games – Wonderland - List of behaviours exhibited online in social gaming which is just as relevant to broader online norms
  2. Trend Briefing covering R.A.K. -  The theory behind and examples of random acts of kindness displayed by online brands
  3. The next five social media trends – Insightful prediction of social media trends and cutting edge examples
  4. Internet’s memory effects quantified in computer study – Reported in the BBC a study into how internet usage rewires the brain
  5. How Algorithms shape our world – Great Ted Talk video by Kevin Slavin
